Back home in Vancouver, and already dreaming of my next adventure…
Anywho! A recap of plane food.
Of course, I called ahead (technically, I whined long enough, and my boyfriend called for me). Offering 17 special meal options, including 4 ‘vegetarian’, I wanted to look into things.
AVML – Asian Vegetarian
VOML – Vegetarian Oriental
VGML – Strict Vegetarian (non-dairy) √
VLML – Vegetarian Lacto-Ovo
Um…. ok. A traveling vegetarian has it pretty good! Vegans, however – we need to do a bit more work. From the information I gathered (from Air Canada, and online), I can conclude that, flying with AC, your safest bet as a vegan is to order VGML!
When booking your flight online, you can select your VGML meal option. As well, call ahead to ensure they’ll be able to meet your request. {If ever I’m asked if my meal choice is due to an allergy – dairy, eggs – I say yes! I find that a ‘vegan’ request often gets shrugged off. However, if you explain that dairy and eggs are simply things you ‘can’t have’, your request may be taken more seriously, and you can avoid overwhelming your server with the whole ‘veganism’ thing!}
If you want to avoid the above, pack your own meal and snacks, or order the FRUIT PLATTER!
Anyway, this is what I got.

Pass the wine!
√The fruit was fresh and juicy.
√Breakfast (Air Canada, domestic) was some sort of sweet potato pureé, chickpea patties, sautéed spinach and grape tomatoes.
√Dinner (Air Canada Rouge, international) was a hash of lentils, brussel sprouts, yams, broccoli. Everything except the kitchen sink kinda thang. Fibrous and smelly! But pretty tasty.
Bottom-right (Air Canada Rouge, international) was absolutely terrible. 3 chunks of boiled potato, mushy zucchini, and tomato wedge. All tasting like cardboard.
√ Condiments and desserts (margarine, jams, creamers, cookies) were all plant-based.
*Note: This girl had business class upgrades. Not sure how international flight economy VGML would differ?
All in all, kudos to Air Canada for accommodating us animal luvas!
Happy VGML travels! ♥
